Mission

Our mission is simple – to build games that foster inclusion and promote cultural diversity and acceptance.  We aim to provide games that make the people that play them feel comfortable and seen.  You shouldn’t have to ignore certain aspects of a game or the setting just to enjoy time with friends.

The Table-Top RPG community is over 50 years old now, and like anything that is that old, it comes with more than a little baggage.  The games we play make assumptions about the kinds of people that inhabit the worlds those games are set in.  Historically – like the media they were inspired by – the dominant RPG games have pulled ideas from real-world cultures in ways that have been biased and full of stereotypes, and assumed a gender binary and assumed heterosexual dynamics featuring patriarchal ideals.

Even if you love this source material, you have to acknowledge that, at its best, it is a product of its time, and does not embody the values we have today.  It definitely doesn’t embody our values, here at AstroFox Productions.

We love the sense of adventure and discovery that these media capture and instill in us – we just don’t want the out-dated and closed-minded values that are so often baked into them.

Oftentimes, even when games try to not make assumptions, they are still built in the context of the world we live in, and in the context of the social systems that make our world difficult, unfair, and uncomfortable for people who are not part of the dominant demographic.

Why does this matter?

If you are not from that demographic, you’ve had to find ways to push aside the icky stuff so that you can play games with friends.  Not ideal.  Sure, you’ve used the same coping mechanisms you use day-to-day – but why should you have to?  Why should you have to do the same emotional gymnastics you do at work for a game?  Why can’t the game and its setting just not make so many assumptions about its characters and players?

You deserve that rush of adventure and the excitement of discovery without the baggage.

The same can largely be said of board games, too.  Especially as we see an explosion in role playing board games and games set in fantasy and sci-fi settings.

Our mission is simple.  Simple isn’t easy.

Do we make perfect games?  We’d like to think so, but the answer is probably no.
Will we make missteps and gaffs in how we present materials in our settings?  Yes, almost certainly.

We guarantee that we try.  And we listen.

We consider how the materials we create affect the people who play them and aim to produce materials that are respectful of cultural differences.

Moreover, we do our best to work with creators from diverse backgrounds in all aspects of product development.

At AstroFox, we believe that, regardless of who you are, the more diverse the people around your table are, the more fun there is to be had.

If you’re tired of trying to ignore the bullshit while indulging in a little escapism, join us.
If you’re looking for more inclusive fun, join us.
If you’re looking for diverse, fun games, join us!

We think you matter.
We make games for people who matter – people like you.
